Woman Killed by Gunshot to the Head in Cancún

Police officers cordon off a Cancún street after a woman was shot dead in Supermanzana 38

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A woman of about 30 was shot dead in the Supermanzana 38 neighborhood of Cancún on Saturday, the latest in a series of violent killings in the resort city.

Residents reported several gunshots at the intersection of Avenida Hobompich and Avenida Edzná during the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 3. Benito Juárez municipal police officers and paramedics were the first to respond, and paramedics confirmed that the injured woman had already died.

The victim had been struck by multiple rounds, including one to the head, according to the initial report. Officers cordoned off the area while agents from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation into the case. Forensic personnel from the Semefo medical examiner’s service removed the body from the scene.

Prosecutors will determine the motive, which could range from a targeted attack to a possible femicide or a violent robbery, officials said.

Another Fatal Shooting Days Earlier

The killing followed another fatal shooting reported in Cancún on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 1. Emergency services were told that residents had found a person with gunshot wounds on Calle Independencia in the Colonia México, near the road out to Mérida.

When authorities arrived, they found the victim had been shot several times, including once in the face, and was no longer alive. The area was cordoned off for investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office, and Semefo personnel took the body to a morgue in Cancún so that the cause of death could be established.
