Police Rescue Mother and Son From Playa del Carmen House Fire

Emergency crews at the scene after police rescued a mother and her son from a house fire in the Pescadores neighborhood of Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A house fire early Sunday in Playa del Carmen’s Pescadores subdivision ended with the dramatic rescue of a mother and her young son, after municipal police pulled both from the burning home through a window.

According to initial police reports, neighbors on Calle Colorines at its intersection with Avenida Alondras heard desperate cries for help coming from inside the house and then saw a thick column of black smoke pouring from the windows and doors, prompting an urgent call to the 911 emergency line.

Officers with the Municipal Public Security Department arrived minutes later as first responders. Realizing the flames were blocking the main entrance, they moved quickly and managed to pull the mother and her son out through one of the home’s windows before the fire consumed the property.

Firefighters then reached the scene and carried out the maneuvers needed to knock down the blaze, cooling the structure and removing debris to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring homes. Crews brought the situation under control after several minutes of intense work.

Paramedics who responded in an emergency unit treated the woman and the boy at the scene. Both showed mild symptoms of smoke inhalation, and after receiving oxygen therapy they were assessed and found to have no serious injuries, so they remained in the care of relatives at the site without needing hospital transport.

Authorities said preliminary inquiries indicate the fire was caused by a fan that was running and overheated, apparently short-circuiting and igniting nearby objects, which set off the rapid combustion.
