Cancún, Quintana Roo — A Brazilian tourist was detained at Cancún International Airport after security personnel found $35,000 in cash inside his luggage, money that authorities say he had not declared on arrival in Mexico.

According to reports, the cash was detected when the traveler’s baggage passed through X-ray screening equipment during routine inspections at the terminal.

The amount is equivalent to just over 635,000 Mexican pesos at the exchange rate used for the conversion.

After confirming that the passenger had not filed the required customs declaration, National Guard officers proceeded with his arrest.

The Brazilian tourist was handed over to the relevant authorities, who will determine his legal status and investigate the origin of the money and how it was being transported.
