Astronomical Events Visible in Yucatán in January 2026
According to the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE), the so-called Wolf Moon Supermoon will take place on January 3, 2026, in the constellation of Gemini. This full moon will appear 6% larger and 13% brighter, promising an illuminated night.
According to the specialized site Star Walk, it is known as the “Wolf Moon” because in the northern hemisphere it was common to hear these animals howling during this time of year, in the cold nights of January. In several communities, this moon represents protection and community.
This month, the Quadrantid meteor shower will be visible in the northern hemisphere on January 3, 2026, with approximately 80 meteors per hour. This shower was forecast as one of the most impressive of the year; however, this year, the light of the full moon will interfere.
Of the 80 meteors per hour expected, only about the 10 brightest will remain visible, in the direction of the constellation Boötes. The shower’s activity will be active from December 28 to January 12, making it one of the most intense of the year.
Two Comets to Be Seen from Earth in January 2026
Comet 24P/Schaumasse will be seen on January 8, 2026, in both hemispheres, and comet C/2024 E1 (Wierzchos) will be visible on January 20, 2026, in the southern hemisphere. Both celestial bodies will reach perihelion this month, which is the moment that marks the time of best visibility.
The comets can be observed with the help of high-magnification binoculars or telescopes, in dark and clear skies, but they will be too faint to be seen with the naked eye.
