A taxi driver has voluntarily given a statement to the State Prosecutor's Office following a heated dispute with a tourist over a fare. The altercation, which occurred in Cozumel, sparked widespread controversy after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

The driver, Adonis Uriel Estrella Torres, was supported by members of the "Adolfo López Mateos" union during his statement. He explained that the disagreement arose from a "misunderstanding" over the cost of a journey outside the city.

According to Torres, the tourists had boarded his taxi in the Atlantis Submarine area and requested a ride to the Welcome to Miami restaurant. Upon arrival, he informed them that the fare for the journey was 10 dollars, which is equivalent to 200 pesos. However, the tourist handed him a 100 peso bill, leading to a disagreement that was caught on video.

In the video, Torres can be seen attempting to clarify the fare for the service. He admitted that his reaction was inappropriate, but stressed that he was "defending his rights". He also expressed regret that the incident had gone viral, creating a negative impression of both the taxi union and the city.

The State Prosecutor's Office is continuing its investigation to establish the facts and determine if any wrongdoing occurred. The incident has sparked a community debate about fare rates and treatment of tourists, issues of paramount importance in international destinations like Cozumel.
