Cancún, Mexico — A private aircraft transporting weapons and drugs was intercepted by elements of the National Guard during security and crime prevention inspections in Quintana Roo. The operation was executed at the Cancún International Airport, where security personnel located the private plane arriving from Guadalajara, Jalisco. Three individuals who disembarked from the aircraft were detained.
The agents proceeded to conduct an inspection inside the plane, where they detected concealed luggage containing weaponry, cash, and drugs, resulting in the following seizure: one 7.62 mm caliber assault rifle, 3,300 live cartridges, 50 magazines, and 32 bags with a total weight of 39 kilograms of a suspected narcotic substance.
The three men were detained, had their rights read to them, and were subsequently turned over to the Federal Public Prosecutor's agent in the state, along with the seized items, to initiate an investigation and determine their legal status.
Background of Aerial Seizures
It is worth recalling that a similar event occurred last July, when federal elements and Armed Forces personnel secured a small plane in the town of Tecomán, Colima, which was transporting half a ton of cocaine.
That action was carried out after personnel from the CENAVI detected the track of a plane that, upon entering Mexican airspace, did not comply with current regulations, leading to its interception and landing on a clandestine airstrip. At the site, three men were detained and 427 kilograms of cocaine were seized, with an estimated black market value of over 90 million pesos.
When reporting on this event, the head of the SSPC, Omar García Harfuch, stated that the aircraft originated from El Salvador, which prompted the president of that country, Nayib Bukele, to request a rectification of the information, claiming it was false. Harfuch responded that the aircraft was identified near San Salvador and reiterated his respect and appreciation for the people of that country.
