Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A conflict over communally owned ejido land in Playa del Carmen escalated into a violent altercation on Tuesday between a group of irregular occupants and workers in the area, leaving at least two people injured.
The Confrontation
According to testimonies from the scene, the events occurred on properties near the settlements known as Alfa and Omega. Irregular occupants, armed with machetes and clubs, broke into the area where a perimeter fence was being constructed to halt the advance of the invasion.
Amid shouts, insults, and threats, men and women attempted to physically assault one another. The tension persisted for several minutes until the arrival of officers from the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC), who provided protection for the workers. No arrests were made.
Context of the Conflict
Residents of the area indicate that the disputed lands are of ejido origin and that the irregular occupation has grown in a climate of impunity. Unofficially, it is mentioned that the invading group may have received political support in a pre-electoral context, which increases the social complexity of the case.
Legal Framework and Omissions
The Penal Code of Quintana Roo stipulates prison sentences for the invasion or dispossession of private property. However, no legal actions have been initiated to date, and no evictions have been reported, generating concern among inhabitants and owners of the ejidos.
Uncertainty in the Area
The lack of arrests and the apparent passivity of local authorities keep the risk of new confrontations latent. Local inhabitants warn that tensions could escalate if measures are not applied to protect property rights and guarantee the safety of those working on the lands.
