Cancún, Quintana Roo — What should be a space for medical care and relief has devolved into a scene of chaos, violence, and neglect. On Tuesday, a brawl between street vendors outside the Jesús Kumate Rodríguez General Hospital ended with a woman and her partner assaulted, along with open threats from an individual known in the area for violent behavior and alleged criminal ties.
Vendors Clash as Hospital Perimeter Descends into Lawlessness
The altercation, sparked by a dispute over selling space for items such as face masks and beverages, was witnessed by patients, family members, and medical staff, who endured moments of panic. The aggressor physically attacked a woman accompanying her husband—another vendor—by throwing stones, then threatened to return with "heavy reinforcements."
This incident is not isolated. Over the past year, the same individual has been involved in multiple confrontations without effective intervention from authorities. Municipal police responded to the scene but made no arrests.
Exploitation Amid Desperation
Compounding the conflict between illegal vendors, another troubling trend has emerged: the unauthorized occupation of spaces along the hospital’s perimeter fencing. Dozens of individuals have erected makeshift shelters to spend the night, as they travel from distant communities and lack lodging while caring for hospitalized relatives. Alarmingly, some are now renting shaded spaces in this improvised settlement, charging for tarps or plots marked with cardboard and plastic—exploiting the vulnerability of those in need.
"We sleep here because we can’t afford a hotel. But now they even want to charge us for a tarp," said Doña Lucía, who has spent over a week tending to her sick son.
Institutional Failure as Conditions Worsen
The area has become a hotspot for overcrowding, violence, illegal commerce, and institutional neglect. Neither the Attorney General’s Office nor the municipal government has taken action, and the hospital’s repeated requests for increased security have gone unanswered.
Risks to patients, staff, and families escalate daily, as violence intertwines with the desperation of those seeking medical care but finding an environment ruled by threats, extortion, and abandonment.
"This is no longer a hospital—it’s no man’s land," concluded an evening-shift doctor.
