Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A vehicle unexpectedly caught fire on Friday morning on Marsella Avenue at the intersection with Tumben Kin Avenue, due to an apparent mechanical failure.
The incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. near the Marsella subdivision when motorists and pedestrians traveling through the area noticed smoke coming from the car’s engine and alerted the 911 emergency line.
According to witnesses, the flames spread rapidly across the front part of the vehicle, prompting its driver to immediately exit to reach safety. Within minutes, the fire covered a large portion of the body of the car.
Municipal Transit officers arrived at the site and proceeded to cordon off the area to prevent risks to other drivers while awaiting the arrival of the fire department. For several minutes, vehicular traffic was affected in both directions on Marsella Avenue, causing slight congestion in the area.
Minutes later, personnel from the Fire Department arrived at the location and managed to control the fire, preventing the flames from spreading to other vehicles or nearby properties. However, the car was left completely charred, resulting in a total loss.
The rescue workers conducted an inspection to rule out additional risks and to cool down the affected area. No injuries or cases of smoke inhalation were reported, and the vehicle’s driver remained at the location while the control and cleanup operations were carried out.
Authorities reported that the incident was likely caused by a mechanical failure in the vehicle’s electrical system, though corresponding investigations will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Following the conclusion of the emergency crews’ work, traffic flow was gradually reopened. The vehicle was removed from the site with the aid of a tow truck, and traffic returned to normal shortly after 8:00 a.m.
The event caused a stir among local residents and motorists traveling through the area, who highlighted the rapid intervention of the emergency services that prevented more serious consequences.
