Cancún, Mexico — A seven-year-old girl from Uruguay died during a school excursion along the coast of Quintana Roo, according to local authorities and international media reports. The child, identified as Guillermina Falcón Santos, was part of a group of students and family members from the city of Mercedes, Uruguay, visiting the Mexican Caribbean as part of an organized trip.
The incident occurred after participants boarded a catamaran for a recreational activity at sea. According to Uruguayan press reports, adults first entered the water to swim, followed by children wearing life jackets and secured with safety ropes under the supervision of accompanying adults.
During the return to the dock, the girl began feeling unwell, experienced vomiting, and subsequently lost consciousness. A doctor traveling with the group provided emergency care and noted that the symptoms could align with the presence of water in the lungs, prompting an investigation into a possible case of secondary drowning.
The Quintana Roo Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that a forensic investigation has been opened to determine the exact cause of death. Official results have not yet been released.
The tragedy has caused shock in Uruguay, where the girl was the daughter of Alejandro Falcón and Flavia Santos Fajardo and the granddaughter of María Fajardo Rieiro, a current deputy of the National Party for the Soriano department.
Through social media, the National Party issued a condolence message expressing solidarity with the family: “We deeply regret the death of little Guillermina Falcón Santos… In this moment of profound grief, our most sincere condolences.”
The repatriation process of the body is underway, coordinated between Mexican authorities and the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry, which will assist the family in completing the necessary procedures.
