Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — With 16 days until the kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA has confirmed that Uruguay’s national team will set up its base camp at the Fairmont Mayakoba resort in Riviera Maya, making it the only squad to stay in Quintana Roo during the tournament.
Earlier reports had suggested that both Portugal and Uruguay would share the venue in Playa del Carmen, but Portugal opted to relocate to Miami, citing that all three of its group-stage matches will be played in the United States, including a final group game against Colombia in the Florida city.
Uruguay, coached by Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa, will compete in Group H alongside Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia. Bielsa has announced a 25-player roster that includes stars such as Federico Valverde (Real Madrid), Darwin Núñez (Al-Hilal), and Ronald Araujo (Barcelona).
The full squad includes goalkeepers Sergio Rochet (Internacional), Fernando Muslera (Estudiantes), and Santiago Mele (Monterrey); defenders Ronald Araujo, Guillermo Varela (Flamengo), José María Giménez (Atlético Madrid), Santiago Bueno (Wolverhampton), Sebastián Cáceres (América), Mathías Olivera (Napoli), Matías Viña (River Plate), and Joaquín Piquerez (Palmeiras); midfielders Manuel Ugarte (Manchester United), Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottenham), Federico Valverde, Giorgian de Arrascaeta (Flamengo), Rodrigo Salazar (Braga), and Nicolás de la Cruz (Flamengo); and forwards Agustín Canobbio (Fluminense), Facundo Pellistri (Panathinaikos), Brian Rodríguez (América), Juan Manuel Sanabria (Real Salt Lake), Maximiliano Araújo (Sporting CP), Darwin Núñez, Rodrigo Aguirre (Tigres), and Federico Viñas (Real Oviedo).
Uruguay will debut on June 15 against Saudi Arabia in Miami, face Cape Verde on June 21 in the same city, and close the group stage against Spain on June 26 in Guadalajara.
Other national teams setting up camps in Mexico include Mexico (at the High Performance Center in Mexico City), South Korea (Chivas Verde Valle in Guadalajara), Colombia (Academia Atlas FC in Guadalajara), Tunisia (Rayados Training Centre in Monterrey), Iran (Xoloitzcuintle Center in Tijuana), and South Africa (Universidad del Fútbol in Pachuca).
