Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The municipal government, led by Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez, in collaboration with representatives of the LGBTQ+ community, inaugurated the urban art installation “Alas con Orgullo Cozumel” (“Wings with Pride Cozumel”) in Plaza del Sol. The project aims to increase visibility and recognition for diverse groups while enhancing the plaza’s appeal as a tourist destination.

A Symbol of Inclusion and Tourism

The mural, created by urban artist Mario “Efors” Martínez, features a monumental swallow bird fused with the colors of the LGBTQ+ pride flag. The artwork spans the staircase leading to the second floor of a building in the city’s central district, which also houses the municipal Tourism and Economic Development offices.

José Elías Farah Ceh, Deputy Director of Tourism, emphasized that the installation serves a dual purpose: acknowledging the local LGBTQ+ community and attracting national and international visitors. He noted that the swallow is an iconic symbol of Cozumel, making the mural a meaningful representation of the island’s identity and values.

Farah Ceh, speaking on behalf of Ángela del Socorro Carrillo Chulín, head of Tourism and Economic Development, reiterated the administration’s commitment to inclusion and respect. He described the transformed staircase as both a visual attraction and a statement that all individuals are valued in Cozumel.

Community Gratitude and Vision

Anya Alonzo Tah Herrera, a transgender community member and advocate for the project, expressed appreciation for the municipal government’s support. She stated, “‘Alas con Orgullo’ symbolizes the freedom and pride of being who we are,” highlighting the mural’s role in fostering a sense of safety and recognition for marginalized groups.

The installation is expected to become a popular photo spot for visitors to Cozumel, further promoting the Pueblo Mágico’s reputation as an inclusive destination.
