José María Morelos, Quintana Roo — In an effort to keep cultural roots alive and strengthen the identity of Maya peoples in the face of the growing influence of Halloween, the Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana Roo (UIMQROO) has launched the call for entries for the "Tradición Viva de Nuestros Pueblos" Photography Contest – 2025 Edition.
The initiative seeks to preserve and bring visibility to the traditions of Hanal Pixán, the commemoration of the Day of the Dead in the Maya world, which represents a profound link between the living and their ancestors.
All interested persons are invited to participate in capturing, through the photographic lens, the essence and color of these celebrations, which year after year resist the cultural displacement provoked by foreign customs.
The competition will award prizes of $5,000, $4,000, and $3,000 pesos, in addition to official recognitions and surprise gifts for the top three winners.
The university emphasized that this contest forms part of its permanent actions to preserve Maya cultural expressions and to foster pride in their roots among the youth.
The complete rules and details regarding the awards ceremony can be consulted on the official UIMQROO website.
This contest not only celebrates tradition but also the cultural resistance of the peoples who keep the flame of Hanal Pixán alive against the fleeting glitter of Halloween.
