Cancún, Mexico — Violence was once again present in Cancún, where on the afternoon of Monday, October 20, an armed attack against the vehicle of a driver partner for the Uber platform was reported. The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 PM in Supermanzana 46, next to the California buildings.

The attack targeted a gray Toyota Yaris. According to initial reports, an individual shot at the driver of this vehicle, allegedly an Uber partner, near the intersection of Kohunlich Avenue and La Luna Avenue in Cancún.

Although it has not been confirmed that the driver was a platform operator, conflicting versions of the incident, which occurred hours ago in the Supermanzana 46 area of the Benito Juárez municipality, have circulated.

One version claimed that an individual who was inside the vehicle, and who had allegedly been picked up at a nearby BBVA bank branch, struggled with the driver upon arriving at the destination. The gunshots heard by residents of the California buildings in Cancún were said to have stemmed from this altercation.

The other version states that the Uber driver partner took a passenger to several points in the city, and the individual who fired the shots appeared to have been following the person inside the car. Upon arriving at the California buildings, the assailant shot at the gray Toyota Yaris.

Authorities will investigate to determine the causes of the attack and identify those responsible. No injuries were reported, nor were there any arrests.

More Violence in the Destination

There is not a day without crimes and violent incidents occurring in Cancún. One of the most notable recent events was the robbery of a jewelry store in Plaza Las Américas. Days prior, armed individuals had already attempted a robbery at that location.

However, it was on the night of Tuesday, October 14, when the robbery of the jewelry store Momentos by Bizzarro, located in the aforementioned shopping mall, was completed.

According to reports, around 8:00 PM on that Tuesday, October 14, armed subjects entered the aforementioned business, subduing the staff. They allegedly fired shots into the air, frightening people in the shopping mall.

Subsequently, the subjects proceeded to break the glass of the display cases safeguarding the merchandise at the Plaza Las Américas jewelry store, such as watches, bracelets, rings, and other costly products.

According to authorities, the alleged criminals attempted to escape through the area where the pet stores are located, aiming to take advantage of the uncertainty they themselves had generated in the mall.

Despite this, authorities were able to track them thanks to information provided by witnesses and recordings from surveillance cameras. It was through this, after deploying an operation, that they located and subsequently arrested the thieves on streets in the Casas del Mar subdivision, in Region 248, near Tules Avenue.
