Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Two men were rescued in Playa del Carmen after nearly drowning. The individuals were reportedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the incident.
According to reports, the event occurred around 5:30 p.m. on the beach at Avenida 38, where on-duty lifeguards acted in time to prevent a tragedy. On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 15, the present lifeguards noticed two individuals having difficulty staying afloat in a deep area and acted immediately to save them.
Emergency protocols were activated immediately. Other bathers were asked to exit the water to concentrate rescue efforts on saving the two men, who were at risk of drowning.
The rescuers entered the sea and successfully saved the two men who were on the verge of drowning. They managed to pull them from the water and bring them to shore. In this manner, a tragedy was avoided on the Playa del Carmen beach in front of dozens of bathers present on the sand.
After the rescue, the two men were evaluated, and it was determined that their health was not at risk and they did not require transport to a hospital. However, it was considered that they were indisposed due to the consumption of alcohol and other substances.
Following the incident, Playa del Carmen authorities reminded citizens and tourists to be very careful when entering the sea, and especially to avoid swimming if they have consumed food, alcohol, or any other substance.
Other Cases of Drownings
A young man of foreign origin who was a naturalized Mexican citizen drowned in Playa del Carmen on Monday, February 10 of the current year. After the unfortunate death was confirmed, the deceased person was also identified. He was a student of Industrial Design and lived in Toluca, State of Mexico.
It was on the afternoon of that Monday when it was reported that a person was drowning on the coast of the federal zone with Calle 6 in Playa del Carmen, prompting other bathers at the scene to ask lifeguards for help.
The lifeguards then entered the water to help this person, who, according to reports, was already floating face down or possibly swallowing a lot of water by that time.
Although the lifeguards pulled this person from the water, unfortunately, it was too late, and he was declared dead, which was later confirmed by paramedics who arrived at the scene after a call to 911.
According to details from witnesses, this person, described as a young man of about 25 years old, of thin build, approximately 1.80 meters tall, and with a beard, had entered the sea to swim in Playa del Carmen and was subsequently pulled away by the current. He was unable to return to the shore, which is when those present asked for help to rescue him.
