Cancún, Mexico — The Turibús route in Cancún, which tours the city’s downtown area, has seen a successful launch with more than 1,000 passengers transported in less than two months since its inauguration. The route, which includes stops at key landmarks such as the Ka’Yok’ Planetarium, Kabah Park, Beto Ávila Stadium, Tajamar Boardwalk, and the María Desatadora de Nudos Sanctuary, is attracting both domestic and international tourists to areas previously overlooked by visitors.
A New Tourism Experience
Adriana Barrera, Head of Public Relations and Outreach at the Ka’Yok’ Planetarium, reported a significant increase in visitors since the Turibús began operations.
“For about a month now, we’ve seen a large influx—I’d estimate over 1,000 people. This includes tourists, but also many local residents from Cancún, as the route is specifically designed for the downtown area,” Barrera said.
She emphasized that the Turibús has strengthened the connection between tourism and education, as visitors initially drawn to Cancún’s beaches are now exploring alternative experiences. The planetarium, included in the route, offers scientific activities, workshops, and astronomical observations, providing a unique attraction.
“We’ve welcomed all kinds of visitors—locals, school groups, and especially Spanish-speaking tourists. The public response has been very positive,” Barrera added.
Strengthening Tourism Diversification
The surge in visitors highlights the success of the collaboration with ADO, the company operating the Turibús route, and underscores the importance of diversifying tourism options in Cancún. Barrera expressed confidence that the upward trend will solidify the Ka’Yok’ Planetarium as a key destination for educational tourism in Quintana Roo.
Beyond its permanent exhibits, the planetarium hosts immersive projections, lectures, and telescope observations, making it an appealing option for families, schools, and science enthusiasts.
