Tulum, Quintana Roo — The Vigía Chico fishing cooperative in Tulum is reporting a strong start to the 2026 lobster season, with roughly 23 tons of lobster caught since the season opened on July 1.
Jorge Alejandro Velázquez, the cooperative’s finance officer, said favorable weather has kept capture rates high during the first weeks of the season.
“Thank God everything is going well. We have 23 tons caught as of the July cutoff. The weather has really allowed us to fish, and we’ve had a good start to the season,” Velázquez said.
On the commercial side, Velázquez explained that despite the region’s low tourist activity, lobster prices have remained stable, allowing fishermen to continue selling their product without major problems.
However, he warned that the deteriorating road to Punta Allen is one of the main issues currently affecting the fishing sector. Some buyers have stopped coming to the community because of the poor road conditions, which complicates direct purchases of the catch and worries families who depend on the trade.
Despite that obstacle, the cooperative remains optimistic about the rest of the season, hoping that the favorable weather holds and that demand keeps sales moving in the coming months.
