Tulum, Quintana Roo — The 2025 Lobster Festival of Punta Allen launched with a vibrant celebration of gastronomy, culture, and environmental stewardship in front of Tulum’s Municipal Palace. The event, which highlights the sustainably harvested Caribbean spiny lobster, brought together fishermen, local authorities, and visitors to honor a tradition spanning four generations in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
A Fusion of Gastronomy and Conservation
The festival began at 4:00 p.m. with the opening of food stalls and the presentation of Bonanza, a book by Punta Allen native Adriana Citlali Borges Pereira. At 5:10 p.m., members of the Vigía Chico Fishing Cooperative and the environmental group Amigos de Sian Ka’an led discussions on responsible fishing practices, emphasizing the community’s role in preserving marine ecosystems.
“We inaugurate the traditional Lobster Festival of Punta Allen 2025, offering a feast for the eyes and palate with local cuisine prepared by our host Guadalupe Cocom,” organizers announced.
The Vigía Chico Cooperative, located in the heart of Maya Ka’an, ensures that lobster reaches tables not only fresh but also imbued with generational stories and traditions.
Cultural Showcase and Culinary Competition
The program featured folk dances, a Mayan ceremony, and an official ribbon-cutting, followed by a tour of food stalls and cooperative exhibits by local officials. At 7:30 p.m., attendees enjoyed a lobster-based cooking competition, culminating in an award for the winning dish.
Organizers stressed that the festival is more than a culinary event—it’s a tribute to those safeguarding marine biodiversity and passing down ancestral knowledge. Activities will continue through the weekend.
