Tulum, Mexico — In response to restrictions on bringing food, umbrellas, and other objects onto Tulum's beaches, the Secretary of Government for Quintana Roo, Cristina Torres Gómez, has stated that these rules are actually imposed by the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp).

The state official explained that the beaches of this municipality are located within a Natural Protected Area (ANP), which subjects them to specific care guidelines. Beaches located outside of these designated zones do not have the same specific rules.

Consequently, bathers wishing to visit beaches within an ANP are not permitted to bring in chairs, umbrellas, or food. The aim is to protect the environment, rather than to incentivize consumption at hotels, restaurants, or commercial establishments. The restrictions seek to reduce environmental impact and protect coastal biodiversity.

"I believe it is a lack of precision; he (Diego Castañón) has been somewhat too literal. Let's remember that there is a Natural Protected Area and the conditions of the Natural Area do not allow you to bring certain things into that zone, such as single-use plastics or alcoholic beverages," she said.

The official explained that the regulations are clearly stipulated by the Commission and that certain items, such as thermoses with water or soft drinks, are permitted in these spaces, but it is necessary to verify beforehand.

Regarding multiple videos circulating on social media about the current situation in Tulum, she indicated that this could be due to a campaign driven by rival destinations, both within and outside the country, that seek to damage the image of the tourist destination.

"I believe it is a good time to analyze the type of tourism we want to attract and, I repeat, not let our guard down against competitors who seek to discredit the destination. We have many competitors in front of us and outside the country who seek to discredit Quintana Roo, but we will not allow it, we will continue to promote our destination," she said.
