Cancún, Mexico — Heavy rainfall has left various zones of Cancún, including the hotel district, with significant disruptions this Wednesday due to severe flooding. The intense rains have caused pooling water and inundations in different parts of the municipality.

A powerful downpour rendered numerous Cancún avenues impassable, stranding motorists who required assistance from fire department personnel, transit officials, and municipal public services workers. The rain began around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday and continued until nearly 11:00 a.m., causing major road flooding, primarily due to the presence of trash that obstructed drains and gutters.

In response, authorities activated an operation to detect priority areas and provide traffic support to citizens, involving 30 personnel, 8 pickup truck patrols, and 15 motorcycle patrols. The operation was deployed across various points in the city, including supermanzanas 01, 63, 66, 71, 90, 227, and 247, as well as on Bonampak and Tulum Avenues.

Presence was also reinforced in zones such as Tabachines, Betel, Paseos del Mar, Villas Otoch Paraíso, La Joya, López Portillo Avenue, and Region 103.

Furthermore, the Municipal Transit Directorate implemented six preventive closures on high-traffic roadways, including the intersections of Kabah and Yaxchilán, Tankah and Cobá, Cobá and Palenque, and Bonampak from Cobá to Uxmal.

"As part of the immediate response traffic actions, this morning traffic officers attended to 6 traffic incidents and assisted in towing and relocating 14 stranded vehicles to safe areas with the support of tow trucks," the department reported.

The precipitation resulted from the interaction of a low-pressure channel, a high-level trough, and tropical wave number 33, which are forecast to continue causing very heavy to pointually intense rains over the southeast of Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula.
