Cancún, Quintana Roo — A 9-year-old girl died after being rescued from strong ocean currents in Cancún’s hotel zone, where she and her mother had been enjoying an afternoon at Playa Las Perlas. Despite emergency efforts, the child was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a hospital, while her mother remains in stable condition.
Rescue Efforts Prove Futile
According to authorities, the mother and daughter were swimming when powerful currents began pulling the girl away from shore. The mother attempted to reach her but was also overcome by the waves, leaving both struggling to return to safety. Lifeguards and officers from the Tourist Police were alerted and rushed to assist.
Upon reaching the pair, responders pulled them unconscious from the water. First aid was administered on the beach before they were transported via a private ambulance to a nearby hospital. The child was declared dead minutes after arrival, while the mother received medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

Forensic services were called to the hospital to document the incident and transfer the child’s body to the Medical Forensic Service (Semefo) for further procedures.
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of heeding safety advisories, particularly during periods of extreme weather conditions.
