Tulum, Mexico — Municipal authorities have implemented a temporary change in the direction of vehicular traffic along Tulum’s coastal zone due to ongoing paving work. The measure, which will remain in effect for the duration of the construction, aims to facilitate traffic flow and ensure the safety of workers and drivers.
Temporary One-Way System Implemented
Starting May 2, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the roadway will be restricted to one-way traffic: from the Parque del Jaguar roundabout toward Avenida Kukulcán. During this period, vehicles that typically travel from the hotel zone toward downtown Tulum must exit exclusively via Avenida Kukulcán.
After 6:00 p.m., normal traffic flow will resume, though adjustments may still occur depending on the progress and conditions of the construction.
Infrastructure Improvements Underway
The paving project is part of a broader urban improvement initiative along the coastal strip, one of the municipality’s busiest tourist corridors. Crews are currently working on a 1.9-kilometer stretch, utilizing heavy machinery and teams of laborers. Municipal Transit personnel are also stationed at the site to direct traffic and prevent congestion in critical areas.
The Directorate of Public Works, in coordination with Municipal Transit, is overseeing the project, which is considered strategic for enhancing Tulum’s road infrastructure. Authorities have urged residents, service providers, and visitors to adhere to temporary signage, follow on-site personnel instructions, and plan their trips in advance when possible.
Long-Term Mobility Goals
Local officials emphasized that the paving work is intended to improve mobility conditions in the medium term, though they acknowledged the temporary inconveniences. They also stated that traffic flow will be continuously monitored to adjust detours if necessary.
The coastal paving project is part of a larger plan to upgrade access to key tourist areas, strengthen connectivity, and streamline traffic in one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.
