Chichén Itzá, Yucatán — Independent tour guides working at the Chichén Itzá archaeological site have denounced alleged irregularities in the assignment of work spaces at the tourist hub, claiming that job positions are being sold for up to 150,000 pesos (approximately $8,500) and are allegedly reserved for children and associates of specific organizations.
Following a meeting, the dissatisfied guides, led by Jorge G. P., accused directors of organizations such as Guías Oficiales Akab Dzib A.C. and Servicios Turísticos Akab Dzib S.C. de R.L. de C.V. of controlling the job market.
They warned that without intervention from authorities, they will take more drastic measures.
The guides also called on the Cultur board and state and federal agencies to ensure transparency in the allocation of work spaces, arguing that the current system limits job access for other guides seeking opportunities at one of the country’s most important tourist sites.
