Cozumel, Mexico — Three individuals were detained by investigative police in the Kusamil neighborhood of Cozumel after being identified as members of a criminal cell tied to drug trafficking and recent violence on the island.
Arrests and Seizures
Quintana Roo State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar confirmed the arrests of Francisco Javier "N," 33, along with Josías "N" and Johana "N," both 22 and originally from Michoacán. Authorities recovered narcotics and two firearms during the operation.
According to officials, the suspects were part of a criminal group involved in illegal activities, including robbery, drug sales, and executions. Johana allegedly worked as a cook for the organization, earning 2,000 pesos monthly, while the two men acted as hitmen, receiving 16,000 pesos per month.
Connection to Homicide
The attorney general confirmed their involvement in the July 1 murder of Jorge Alberto "N," alias El Randal, who was killed inside his home in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood. A four-person commando reportedly broke into his residence, assaulted him, stole 30,000 pesos, and fatally shot him in the head with a long gun. His partner witnessed the crime.
Investigators stated that the victim also had ties to drug trafficking and belonged to a rival faction, which may have prompted the attack.
Legal Proceedings
The three detainees have been formally charged and will face mandatory pretrial detention for two years as the investigation continues.
