Three Cancun Taxi Drivers Found Dead in Suspected Kidnapping Spree

Two taxi drivers were discovered fatally shot on the Cancun-Merida road this Friday, with another body found near the nightclub area of Cancun. All three victims are believed to be taxi drivers from the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' union and were reportedly kidnapped from the hotel zone.

The bodies of the first two victims were found discarded on a stretch of the Cancun-Merida highway. Police reports from the scene indicate that both bodies showed visible signs of violence and multiple gunshot wounds. The victims were estimated to be between 20 and 35 years old.

While not yet confirmed, there is speculation that the taxi drivers may have been kidnapped by criminals extorting for protection money in the areas where the drivers park in the hotel zone.

In a related incident, another man, thought to be a coordinator of a taxi base, was found severely beaten in the nightclub area of Cancun's hotel zone. He later died in the city's General Hospital. According to one account, the victim was last seen celebrating with friends in the hotel zone's nightclub area before disappearing. He was found the following day by fellow taxi drivers, showing clear signs of torture.

Meanwhile, Águeda Esperilla, a spokesperson for Uber drivers in Cancun, has recently spoken out about the ongoing harassment of app-based drivers at Cancun Airport.
