Cancún, QRoo — The government of Quintana Roo has projected the opening of 11 new hotels with 5,203 additional rooms this year, signaling continued growth in the state’s tourism sector. The announcement was made during a press conference led by President Claudia Sheinbaum in Chetumal, where updates on investment growth, sargassum management, and tourism development were shared.
Hotel Investment Expands Across the State
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama reported significant progress in hotel investment, noting that 15 new lodging centers with 4,915 rooms were added in 2024. As of July 2025, an additional four hotels with 1,424 rooms have opened, bringing the total to 6,339 new rooms in just over a year and a half.
The state’s projections for 2025–2027 include 23 more lodging centers with 8,353 rooms, of which 11 hotels—totaling 5,203 rooms—are expected to open this year.
In southern Quintana Roo, Governor Lezama confirmed Royal Caribbean’s investment in Mahahual, which includes the $1 billion Perfect Day México project. Another real estate development, Playa Lahun Tiku, is underway with an investment of $260 million.
Sargassum Management and Biogas Initiative
Addressing the persistent issue of sargassum, Lezama highlighted advancements in the state’s comprehensive strategy, developed in collaboration with the Mexican Navy. A pilot biogas plant, set to launch soon, will process sargassum into energy, serving as a model for industrializing the algae.
Housing and Infrastructure Developments
Octavio Romero Oropeza, head of Infonavit, announced the construction of 8,128 new homes, with plans for over 70,000 additional units in the near future. He also reported that 166,000 frozen loans have been restructured, with more than 26,000 receiving interest reductions and lower monthly payments.
Security Improvements
Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, disclosed a 61.3% drop in intentional homicides in Quintana Roo from July 2024 to July 2025. In Benito Juárez, homicides decreased by 70.6%, while high-impact crimes across the state fell by 29.2%.
Law enforcement efforts have resulted in the seizure of 1,300 kilograms of narcotics, 3,258 arrests for high-impact crimes, and a 90% prosecution rate by the State Attorney General’s Office. Authorities have also confiscated nearly 300 firearms, 6,200 rounds of ammunition, and hundreds of magazines.
Additional reductions include a 22% decline in street robberies, an 8% drop in vehicle theft, and a 6% decrease in business robberies. No kidnappings were reported during the period, and 214 individuals were arrested for extortion.
The press conference underscored Quintana Roo’s commitment to bolstering tourism, infrastructure, and public safety as key drivers of economic growth.
