Thieves Break Into SUV at Cancun Mall Parking Lot, Victim Says Management Refused to Help

A vandalized SUV with a broken window in a parking lot in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Thieves smashed the window of an SUV parked at a Vips restaurant in Plaza Las Americas on Friday afternoon, stealing valuables from inside. The victim said the parking company and the restaurant both refused to take responsibility or review security footage.

The parking lot is operated by Public Parking. When notified, administrative staff immediately disclaimed liability, as did the Vips restaurant, according to the victim.

The victim said the parking company declined to check surveillance videos to identify the suspect, claiming that recordings can only be handed over to authorities through a formal complaint — a process the victim considered unnecessary given the urgency.

“After eating here for an hour … robbed!” the affected citizen said. “You go to the restaurant and they say they’re not responsible. Unbelievable! When will the authorities take charge of this? They’re going to keep allowing this. They’re good at collecting permits and taxes, but they don’t take responsibility for anything.”

Although the victim called 911 to request police presence and file a report, no patrol officers arrived at the scene.
