Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The "Tears of Golden Maya" (K’ank’an maayaj ja’il ich) Honey Fair was inaugurated this Thursday, organized by the Government of Quintana Roo through the Secretariat of Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development (SEDARPE) and the State Committee for Livestock Promotion and Protection. The event highlights beekeeping as a cornerstone of culture, livelihood, and rural development.
A Space for Transformation and Shared Prosperity
The fair aligns with the New Agreement for Well-Being and Development in Quintana Roo, an initiative led by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa to reshape public management with ethical and community-focused policies. Beekeeping is central to this vision, recognizing the economic and social contributions of producers in the state’s rural development.
Attendees explored vendor booths, sampled honey-based cuisine, purchased products directly from producers, and participated in educational talks and children’s activities. The event emphasized the ecological importance of bees in pollination and food security, bridging technical knowledge with public awareness.
Showcasing Apiculture’s Bounty
Products on display included pollen, propolis, royal jelly, mead, beeswax, creams, soaps, candies, and honey from diverse floral sources, underscoring the sector’s market potential. SEDARPE Secretary Jorge Aguilar Osorio noted the fair’s role in fostering government-producer collaboration under an inclusive governance model. He stressed the need to protect bees for their ecological and nutritional value.
The fair supports beekeepers adhering to best livestock practices, with 27 producers from Othón P. Blanco, Bacalar, Lázaro Cárdenas, and Playa del Carmen participating. Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado and Sergio Crisanto Morteo, President of the State Committee for Livestock Promotion and Protection, were among the dignitaries present.
Through initiatives like this, Quintana Roo’s government reinforces agriculture as a driver of cultural preservation, economic growth, and sustainable development.
