Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A taxi driver led police on a chase Friday night after allegedly trying to evade a DUI checkpoint on Avenida 30 at the intersection with the federal highway and Avenida 7 Sur, prompting a response from multiple security agencies.
According to initial reports, the driver, who had a female passenger, accelerated to flee the checkpoint and nearly ran over a traffic officer during the maneuver, triggering the pursuit.
The chase continued along the federal highway to the Misión Villamar I neighborhood on Avenida Chemuyil, where authorities finally intercepted the vehicle. A convoy including state police, the Mexican Navy, and the Mexican Army was also present at the scene.
After being surrounded, the driver was arrested and taken to the Public Security Department for processing. The female passenger was released at the scene after authorities found no evidence linking her to the incident.
Officials will determine the driver’s legal status and any potential charges or infractions stemming from his attempt to evade the DUI checkpoint.
