Mexico City — Three men allegedly involved in the murder of Mario Machuca Sánchez, a leader of the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (CROC) in Cancún, have been arrested in Mexico City following a joint operation by federal and local authorities.
Coordinated Operation Leads to Arrests
The suspects, aged 21, 34, and 47, were detained in the Moctezuma neighborhood of the Venustiano Carranza borough. Authorities reported that during a security check, nine bags of marijuana were seized from the individuals.
One of the detainees, the 34-year-old, had an outstanding arrest warrant for aggravated robbery issued in March of this year.
The operation involved personnel from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the Attorney General's Office (FGR), and the National Guard (GN), in coordination with the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office and Mexico City’s Attorney General’s Office (FGJ) and Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC).
Background of the Crime
Machuca Sánchez was killed on the afternoon of August 4 in Cancún’s Benito Juárez municipality while inside his vehicle, a 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe. According to authorities, two assailants on a motorcycle—one carrying a food delivery app backpack—opened fire on him at the intersection of Kabah and Chichén Itzá avenues.
Quintana Roo Attorney General Raciel López Salazar confirmed that a "clearly defined line of investigation is the labor motive," though he declined to provide further details due to the ongoing nature of the case.
Investigators later recovered the motorcycle used in the attack, as well as the delivery backpack.
The suspects were transferred to the Attorney General’s Office, where their legal status will be determined.
