Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A suspect has been formally charged with aggravated extortion after allegedly demanding protection money from a grocery store in this coastal city, authorities announced.
The State Prosecutor’s Office said it secured charges against Víctor Manuel “N” for actions that may constitute aggravated extortion against two victims whose identities remain confidential.
The suspect is accused of visiting a grocery store located between Gavilanes and Cigüeñas avenues in the Villas del Sol neighborhood, where he delivered an extortion note demanding 35,000 pesos in so-called “protection money.” The note reportedly threatened harm to the victims’ family members if they failed to comply.
Authorities noted that Víctor Manuel “N” is believed to be a member of a criminal group responsible for generating violence in the state.
During a court hearing, a judge ordered the suspect to stand trial and imposed preventive detention for the duration of the judicial process.
