Playa del Carmen, QR — The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has announced it is closely monitoring an appeal in a 2017 assault case that left a Playa del Carmen resident paralyzed. The agency stated it is working to ensure the victim’s right to full compensation for damages, including prison time for the perpetrators.

Details of the Assault

In a statement, the FGE confirmed the case involves the assault of Roberto “G” on January 20, 2017, in Playa del Carmen, carried out by Rodrigo “N” and María Fernanda “N.” Surveillance footage showed Rodrigo “N” physically attacking Roberto “G” outside his home in the La Joya subdivision. The assault left Roberto “G” paraplegic after repeated blows.

The altercation reportedly stemmed from a dispute over Rodrigo “N” and María Fernanda “N”’s unleashed dog, which Roberto “G,” their neighbor, had complained about. Both suspects evaded justice for years until 2024, when Rodrigo “N” was sentenced to 10 years in prison plus damages, while María Fernanda “N” received a three-year sentence plus damages.

On August 12, 2024, a judge ruled María Fernanda “N” guilty as an accomplice to Rodrigo “N” in the aggravated assault against Roberto “G.” She was sentenced to three years, seven months, and 22 days in prison and ordered to pay 6 million pesos in compensation, which was deposited into the victim’s account on November 28, 2024.

Rodrigo “N” faced trial on September 20, 2024, for aggravated assault after physically attacking Roberto “G,” causing injuries that resulted in permanent paralysis. The FGE presented evidence leading to his sentencing of 10 years and one month in prison, plus full compensation for damages. The Eighth Criminal Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice upheld the sentence on April 24, 2025.

Ongoing Appeal and Victim’s Rights

The FGE confirmed that Rodrigo “N” has filed a direct appeal against the ruling. The agency stated it is “closely monitoring the appeal to confirm the verdict and enforce the sentence, as well as to secure full compensation for the victim.”

“Through this process, the Attorney General’s Office guarantees and enforces the victim’s right to complete compensation for damages,” the FGE emphasized.

The case highlights the long legal battle faced by Roberto “G” and the state’s efforts to ensure justice is served.
