Starbucks Donates 100 Million Coffee Trees, Announces 50 Million More to Combat Climate Change

Mexico City — Starbucks announced it has reached its goal of donating 100 million coffee trees to farmers worldwide as part of its strategy to strengthen the crop’s resilience against climate change.

This milestone results from nearly a decade of investment in agricultural research focused on developing coffee varieties more resistant to adverse climate conditions, including rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and pests.

Support for Coffee Farmers in Latin America

Since 2017, Starbucks has distributed trees in countries including Mexico, El Salvador, and Guatemala, aiming to help small producers renew their crops, improve productivity, and guarantee the quality of Arabica coffee.

The donated trees largely originate from research conducted at Hacienda Alsacia, the company’s global innovation farm in Costa Rica, where sustainable agricultural practices are developed.

Climate Change and Coffee Production

Climate change represents one of the main challenges for the coffee industry, directly affecting farm productivity and bean quality.

In response, Starbucks is collaborating with Conservation International to implement sustainable practices that protect ecosystems and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

Funding and Training for Producers

Beyond tree donations, the company has promoted financing programs through its Global Farmer Fund, which has provided $100 million to small producers for infrastructure improvements, crop renewal, and economic stability.

This support includes technical advice on agricultural practices, risk management, and climate adaptation, aiming to ensure long-term sustainability.

Next Goal: 50 Million More Trees

As part of its future strategy, Starbucks announced it will donate an additional 50 million trees in key regions including Africa, Asia, and Latin America, reinforcing its commitment to responsible sourcing and agricultural innovation.
