Spike in Animal Fatalities Raises Alarm in Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — A troubling surge in wildlife fatalities is drawing attention to reckless driving and infrastructure neglect in this coastal community. Locals report that countless iguanas, snakes and sereques have been killed by fast-moving vehicles. Two nights ago, motorists drove at high speeds along PA Boulevard, running over and killing a cat.

“Do we need to wait until someone’s child is run over before we take action?” lamented one long-time resident of the community who asked to remain anonymous.

Even more startling: the federal environmental agency PROFEPA has designated the gated community Puerto Aventuras a “red zone” after documenting multiple electrocution deaths among wildlife. In the past six months alone, three monkeys, porcupines, raccoons, squirrels and various birds, including vultures, have been found badly injured or dead after contact with poorly maintained power lines. One monkey was recently killed near Caleta Yalkú when overgrown branches near energized lines gave way.

Residents and wildlife advocates are demanding immediate action: better traffic enforcement to curb speeding, trimming of trees around power lines, and urgent maintenance of utility infrastructure. “How many more animals must be sacrificed before this extreme problem is fixed?” one neighbour asked.

While “Red Zone” isn’t an official legal term, the label reflects PROFEPA’s growing concern over public safety and environmental neglect. With both public safety and biodiversity at risk, stakeholders say the community can no longer afford inaction.

Requests have been made for funds to be alocated for a dedicated vet inside the gated community to address the injured animals. Currently the fate of injured wildlife is left to kind-hearted residents and volunteers.
