Chetumal, Quintana Roo — At least a dozen communities in southern Quintana Roo have reported flooding due to heavy storms that have battered the region for several days. In the Rivera del Río Hondo area of Othón P. Blanco municipality, residents of at least four communities have reported water entering their homes.

Rising Waters Overwhelm Communities

Juan Méndez Laines, commander of the National Emergency Commission in the area, confirmed that the communities of Javier Rojo Gómez, Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, Pucté, and Obregón Nuevo have begun experiencing water accumulation inside homes. In Pucté, streets have become impassable due to flooding caused by recent rainfall.

Social media reports indicate that, in the absence of support from municipal delegates, residents of communities such as Agua Dulce, Javier Rojo Gómez, and Pucté have stepped in to assist affected families and elderly individuals.

Emergency Shelters Activated

Temporary shelters have been established at the Ejidal House and secondary school in Javier Rojo Gómez, as well as the Ejidal House, primary school, and secondary school in Pucté.

In Álvaro Obregón, the Secretariat of National Defense is working to set up a community kitchen to provide meals for families impacted by the floods. Meanwhile, in Javier Rojo Gómez, security and rescue teams continue assisting with evacuations to temporary shelters.

Bacalar Also Hard Hit

The municipality of Bacalar has also faced severe flooding, with the communities of San Román, Huatusco, and Isidro Fabela submerged. Residents describe critical conditions due to torrential rains.

"Streets, houses, and shelters are all flooded—people are calling for help," one local resident reported.

Landslides, road closures, and additional flooding have left thousands in Bacalar cut off, with water covering highways and blocking vehicle traffic. One affected route is the road connecting Huatusco to Río Escondido, now impassable due to high water levels.

The "Lagartos" bridge has also become a critical point as water levels rise alarmingly.

Cross-Border Impact

Authorities in Belize have reported flooded communities and submerged roadways, complicating travel. Emergency protocols have been activated to assist residents whose homes have been inundated.

The situation remains dire as southern Quintana Roo grapples with the ongoing effects of relentless rainfall.
