Mexico — President Claudia Sheinbaum has reported that approximately 100,000 homes are estimated to have been damaged by the intense rains and flooding recorded in five states across the country. She clarified that this figure is preliminary and will be confirmed once the census conducted by the Secretariat of Welfare concludes.

During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum explained that the estimate was derived from the total number of homes in the impacted municipalities and the calculated percentage of damage per locality. "Yesterday we made an estimate that there could be 100,000 homes affected in the five states of the Republic. It is a totally preliminary figure; until the census is finished, we cannot give a final number," she stated.

The president insisted that support for the affected families will be coordinated directly by state and municipal governments, with the backing of the federal government.

Coordination and Transparency in the Delivery of Aid

Sheinbaum requested that all donations and support from civil society be channeled through local authorities, with the goal of guaranteeing transparency and avoiding duplication. This comes after several citizens reported difficulties in delivering aid directly to affected communities.

"We are asking, in coordination with the state governments, that if any civil organization wants to provide support, they should contact the number 079, where all the coordination is handled. There, they can be given a list of the household goods that are required," indicated the president.

The same number, she added, also receives reports of missing persons and functions as a liaison to coordinate the delivery of aid in an orderly manner. "The support will be organized through the Secretariat of National Defense and the state and municipal governments," she emphasized.

The Welfare Secretariat's Census Advances House by House

The Secretary of Welfare, Ariadna Montiel, announced that the census has already begun in the five affected states, with the participation of 600 brigades and 3,000 national public servants from across the country.

"The census is being conducted house by house, registering personal data, the number of household members, and the type of damage to the home, furnishings, or productive activities," detailed Montiel.

Each censused home will receive an identification tag and a wristband as proof to access the support. This measure seeks to ensure that resources reach those in need directly, without intermediaries or delays.

Immediate Support and Recovery Plan

Ariadna Montiel announced that the delivery of the first payment will begin this same week, destined to cover cleaning tasks in the affected homes. Subsequently, the Secretariat of National Defense will coordinate the delivery of packages of basic household goods, which will include a refrigerator, stove, fan, and mattress.

"We are going to reach all the homes, even those that today remain cut off. No one will be left without receiving support," assured the secretary.

The recovery plan, she emphasized, seeks not only to address the immediate emergency but also to reestablish the living conditions of the communities hardest hit by the disaster.

A National Challenge for Reconstruction

The recent rains and floods have tested the response capacity of the federal government. With thousands of families left homeless and extensive material damage, the challenge will be to ensure that aid arrives on time and with transparency.

The Welfare Secretariat's census represents the first step to quantify the real impact and distribute resources fairly. For many families, the hope of rebuilding their homes will depend on the effectiveness with which this plan is executed.

Sheinbaum reaffirmed her commitment to personally accompany the support actions and keep the citizenry informed of the progress. "We are working so that no family is left behind," she concluded.
