Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A dramatic accident involving a gray Mazda CX5 SUV with license plates YZA-231-D from the state of Yucatán left three women with significant injuries after the vehicle lost control and collided with the metal base of a flag-style road sign on Prolongación Colosio Avenue, west of Playa del Carmen.

Accident Details

The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. today as the SUV, traveling from west to east, approached the intersection with Lilis Avenue. Authorities suspect the driver, identified as Javier I.C.L., was arriving in the city via the Mérida–Playa del Carmen highway.

Due to wet pavement from morning rains and excessive speed, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid to the right. The SUV then jumped onto the median, crashing into the metal base of the road sign with such force that the entire front end became embedded, toppling the structure.

Emergency Response

Witnesses immediately assisted the occupants and called emergency services. The front passenger and another woman exited the vehicle to help their injured relatives, who were lying on the sidewalk awaiting medical attention.

Traffic and road safety personnel, along with multiple ambulances, arrived at the scene. The driver and three passengers—identified as 23-year-old Paola, 26-year-old Vanessa, and 33-year-old Kembly—were transported to different hospitals in the city for treatment.

Aftermath and Warnings

The vehicle was towed to the city impound lot, and the case was handed over to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) for further legal proceedings. Preliminary estimates place material damages at over 160,000 pesos, including the destroyed road sign and the SUV, which was declared a total loss.

Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution, particularly during rainy conditions, and emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits and traffic signs. They also reminded passengers to wear seat belts, noting that rear-seat occupants often sustain more severe injuries in collisions due to not buckling up.
