Senator Fernández Noroña Criticizes Handling of Arriaga and López Removals

Mexico City — Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña has criticized the way two officials were recently removed from their positions, arguing that the handling of the dismissals gives political opponents ammunition to celebrate.

Fernández Noroña specifically addressed the removals of Marx Arriaga from his role as head of educational materials at the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) and Adán Augusto López Hernández from his position coordinating the Morena party’s parliamentary group in the Senate.

In his regular video address on social media, the senator described Arriaga’s treatment as “incorrect, unjust, and insensitive.”

“Even if Arriaga’s departure was justified, we’re handling it poorly,” Fernández Noroña said. “The same goes for Adán Augusto’s removal. The political right isn’t satisfied with just that—they want more, they want to see blood, they want intrigue. And their lie gets stronger.”

The former Senate president defended Arriaga’s record and called for strengthening unity within the Fourth Transformation movement in the face of opposition attacks.

Fernández Noroña expressed confidence in President Claudia Sheinbaum’s leadership, noting she had made clear that Arriaga’s departure wouldn’t mean reverting to previous educational materials.

“It was very important work, a serious advancement,” he said of Arriaga’s educational reforms. “Of course the right didn’t like that we were talking about recent historical events that are indisputable,” he added, referencing the 1968 student massacre.
