Mexico City — The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), through the Undersecretariat of Biodiversity and Environmental Restoration, is inviting the public to participate in the #PlayaSinPlástico contest.
The call for entries forms part of the National Strategy for the Cleaning and Conservation of the Beaches and Coasts of Mexico, which was presented by President Claudia Sheinbaum on June 5 during the commemoration of World Environment Day. The central objective of the strategy is to have beaches and coasts free of plastic by the year 2030, and to achieve this, the public is invited to adopt a beach somewhere in the country to help maintain its cleanliness.
A fundamental pillar of this strategy and in the construction of a sustainable future is environmental education. For this reason, the Undersecretariat of Biodiversity and Environmental Restoration is calling on Mexican citizens to create a video that includes:
- How to help achieve beaches free of plastics
- How to eliminate single-use plastics from daily life
- How they can contribute to conserving the biodiversity of Mexican beaches
Interested participants must publish their video on their personal social media accounts using the hashtag #PlayaSinPlástico, which will register them for this call. The contest details, which concludes on January 11, 2026, can be consulted on the strategy’s website: https://www.adoptaunaplaya.com/blog/categoria/campaña
The winners will be chosen by a jury based on the use of the hashtag, the number of likes the published video receives, and the video’s content.
The first-place winner will receive: an iPhone 16 Pro, donated by Tetra Pak México, and an all-inclusive trip to a beach in Quintana Roo (Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen), courtesy of The Fives Hotels and Maritime Procurement Services.
The second-place winner will receive: an iPhone 16 Pro, donated by Tetra Pak México.
The third-place winner will receive: a Samsung Galaxy S25 phone, courtesy of Maritime Procurement Services.
This contest is non-profit. Because the prizes are donations from hotels, companies, and organizations that have joined the National Strategy with the aim of fostering environmental awareness and supporting the conservation of Mexican beaches, the prizes may be updated throughout the duration of the call. Any updates will be announced on the Undersecretariat’s social media accounts, so it is important for interested participants to follow the accounts:
- Tiktok: @restauracionambiental
- X: @BioRestAmb
- Facebook: Biodiversidad + Restauración
- Instagram: biorestamb
The purpose of the #PlayaSinPlástico call is to involve more people in the care of Mexican beaches and to raise awareness about the problem of plastic pollution in these ecosystems. It is estimated that 13 million tons of plastic end up in the sea every year, which is equivalent to dumping a truck full of garbage into the ocean every minute.
