Cancún, MX — The Quintana Roo Secretariat of Tourism (SEDETUR) and digital transformation company GigNet have announced the installation of three new public, free internet modules in tourist destinations of the Mexican Caribbean. This initiative is part of a Collaboration Agreement signed on March 27, 2023, with Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.
“Technological innovation is a key driver to consolidate the Mexican Caribbean as a world-class tourist reference. Through this alliance with GigNet, we not only strengthen the digital infrastructure in our destinations but also guarantee more equitable access to connectivity for our communities,” said the head of SEDETUR, Bernardo Cueto Riestra.
In a new phase of this joint program with SEDETUR, the municipalities of Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Isla Mujeres are being integrated as the next destinations to benefit from the installation of dedicated 1 Gigabit links. With this expansion, GigNet will reach more than 160,000 square meters of free public internet coverage through this alliance with SEDETUR.
The coverage locations will be:
- Puerto Morelos: Parque Fundadores (Old Town) and the recently renovated Muelle de Pescadores (Fishermen's Pier).
- Playa del Carmen: Parque Fundadores and Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue).
- Isla Mujeres: Playa Norte (North Beach).
Cueto Riestra emphasized that this digital transformation promotes a more inclusive, competitive tourism model prepared for the challenges of the future. He also noted that this initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy seeking to boost connectivity, technological innovation, and sustainable development, while also helping to reduce the digital divide in Quintana Roo.
GigNet inaugurated the first two GIGS (GigNet Internet Gathering Station) modules in October 2023 in Cancún's Hotel Zone: Playa Delfines, providing 36,000 square meters of high-speed free public WiFi and connecting more than 2,500 devices daily, and Kilómetro Cero.
In 2024, the company continued its expansion with the installation of two additional modules in Tulum, which currently provide daily connectivity to more than 650 devices each. These new links will provide connectivity to new public WiFi modules located in strategic points of high tourist value.
With these actions, GigNet and SEDETUR reaffirm their commitment to the digital transformation of the Mexican Caribbean, driving digital inclusion and elevating the quality of the tourist experience in the region.
