Mahahual, Quintana Roo, Mexico — Royal Caribbean has officially acquired the Costa Maya port and is preparing to launch Perfect Day México, a world-class private destination slated to open in 2027. The project, one of the cruise line’s most ambitious developments, aims to redefine the cruise experience in the Mexican Caribbean while significantly boosting tourism in Mahahual. Additionally, the company is moving forward with its Royal Beach Club Cozumel, scheduled to debut in late 2026, further solidifying Mexico as a key destination in its portfolio.

A New Era for Mahahual and Cruise Tourism

Daniella Hoffmann, Assistant Vice President of Product Development at Royal Caribbean, confirmed in an interview that the project has entered a new phase. “We are now officially the owners of the Costa Maya port, and that fills us with excitement. The design of the destination is nearly finalized, and we are refining details to ensure this is a 100% Royal Caribbean experience—but also deeply Mexican,” she said.

Perfect Day México will draw inspiration from the successful Perfect Day at Coco Cay in the Bahamas while introducing unique elements tailored to the region. Highlights include the Jaguar Tower, the tallest water slide structure in the Americas, a lazy river, and other exclusive attractions not found in other Royal Caribbean destinations.

The site will be divided into themed zones catering to families, relaxation seekers, and partygoers. “We will have a Hideaway-style area, similar to Coco Cay, featuring a vibrant atmosphere with music and fun, as well as a quieter section for those looking to unwind,” Hoffmann added.

Emphasizing Mexican Culture and Local Talent

A core focus of Perfect Day México is integrating Mexico’s cultural and culinary richness. Hoffmann confirmed plans to feature authentic local cuisine alongside familiar options. “Our guests will always find burgers or nuggets for kids, but we want Mexican food to be genuinely represented. We want locals to taste it and say, ‘This is truly ours.’”

To achieve this, Royal Caribbean is collaborating with regional chefs and exploring partnerships with Mexican architects and artists. “We aim for Perfect Day México to be a platform for Mexican talent. We’re hiring local firms and incorporating regional art throughout the spaces,” Hoffmann noted.

Community Engagement and Economic Impact

Beyond tourism, the project is expected to bring significant social and economic benefits to Mahahual. Royal Caribbean has initiated open dialogue with the local community, including public meetings and ongoing communication channels. “We held an event to share our plans and listen to community needs. We’re establishing permanent communication lines, even via WhatsApp,” Hoffmann revealed.

Currently, Mahahual welcomes approximately two million cruise passengers annually, half of whom arrive via Royal Caribbean. With Perfect Day México, the company projects this number will rise to five million passengers within the next decade, transforming the region’s economy. “We’re working closely with the government to ensure Mahahual’s growth is orderly and sustainable. We want shared prosperity,” Hoffmann emphasized.

Cozumel’s Parallel Transformation: Royal Beach Club

Alongside Perfect Day México, Royal Caribbean is developing Royal Beach Club Cozumel, set to open in late 2026. Hoffmann stated that progress is on track, with designs nearly complete and environmental impact assessments underway.

Unlike the adrenaline-focused Perfect Day México, the Cozumel destination will prioritize relaxation, oceanfront experiences, and local gastronomy. “Both destinations will reflect Mexico’s identity, but each will have its own personality,” Hoffmann explained.

Next Steps and Environmental Approvals

The next major milestones for both projects involve securing environmental permits, a process Royal Caribbean is conducting in collaboration with Mexican authorities. “We’ve received strong government support, and everything is progressing positively,” Hoffmann said.

With Royal Beach Club Cozumel opening in 2026 and Perfect Day México following in 2027, Royal Caribbean is reinforcing its commitment to immersive, sustainable, and locally integrated cruise tourism in the Mexican Caribbean.
