Rosy Zapata Emerges as Key Contender in Cancún Taxi Union Leadership Race

Rosy Zapata, a candidate for leadership of the Cancún taxi union

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Internal movements have begun within Cancún’s taxi union as it prepares for its leadership succession, with Rosy Zapata emerging as a key contender for the top position.

Every three years following the anniversary of the Sindicato de Taxistas Andrés Quintana Roo, internal activity intensifies ahead of leadership renewal. This process historically marks the start of the contest for control of the largest and most influential union on the Yucatan Peninsula.

According to sources within the union, in recent weeks, approaches, meetings, and definitions among different groups have increased, aiming to position candidates who can compete for the Secretary General role.

In this scenario, one of the names gaining significant traction is Rosy Zapata, who appears as a near-certain candidate for the position, backed by a sector of concessionaire members.

Zapata is part of the union’s current leadership structure, where she serves as interim Assistant Secretary General. Her name has gained prominence not only due to her aspirations but also because of the role she has played in the union’s internal operations in recent years.

Multiple sources agree she has been one of the figures who remained active during complex periods for the organization, contributing to the continuity of administrative functions and member services.

Originally from Mérida, Yucatán, Zapata has built her career within the union. She started in 2015 as a cashier and later became head of the cashier department. She subsequently held positions such as Subsecretary of Income and Secretary of the Interior, roles that allowed her to consolidate experience in the administration and operation of the organization.

Although the internal process has not yet been formalized, the movement of candidates and the emergence of names anticipate a contest that, as in previous years, will be marked by the definition of leadership and alliances within the union.

For now, Rosy Zapata’s name is among the first in the race, a contest that is just beginning and will define the direction of one of the key organizations in Cancún’s economic and tourist life.
