Quintana Roo, Mexico — The State Tourism Registry (Retur-Q) of Quintana Roo has surpassed three thousand registered service providers, announced the state Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, who advanced that starting in 2026, vacation rental platforms will only be able to offer properties that have this mandatory registration.
“We have over 3,000 service providers; we are doing very well. Looking ahead to 2026, platforms will be able to offer a property only if it has the State Registry,” stated the official, highlighting that this measure will provide certainty about the real supply of rooms on digital platforms and facilitate their regulation in coordination with municipalities.
Towards a Level Playing Field Between Hotels and Digital Lodging
Cueto Riestra affirmed that the hotel sector has responded the most to Retur-Q and reiterated that the objective is to establish equitable conditions between traditional hotels and vacation rentals, which in many cases operate without the controls applied to the formal sector.
The proposal includes organization, regulation, and operational standards to improve the visitor experience and guarantee minimum conditions of safety and compliance.
Vacation Rentals Must Meet Formal Requirements
The secretary indicated that vacation rentals must adjust to guidelines similar to those of other tourism providers, such as:
- Civil Protection norms,
- Measures for the prevention of human trafficking,
- Administrative and operational requirements to obtain their registration.
Only then will they be able to offer their services on digital platforms.
Agreements with Municipalities and Review of Over 40,000 Properties
Cueto Riestra recalled that agreements have already been signed with several municipalities to strengthen regulation from the municipal level.
The Secretary of Tourism has identified around 40,000 properties dedicated to vacation rentals in Quintana Roo, although a detailed review is still required to verify their operation, location, and regulatory compliance before fully integrating them into the registry.
