Bacalar, Mexico — Residents of the Limones community in Bacalar municipality cleared a blockade on Federal Highway 307 on Saturday night after protesting for nearly two hours to demand the withdrawal of federal security forces from the area.
The protesters had blocked the Bacalar-Felipe Carrillo Puerto highway section, burning tires and branches on the roadway. The demonstration aimed to pressure the Mexican Navy and National Defense forces to halt operations in Limones, where a clash with a criminal group occurred just four days earlier.
The scale of the protest forced Navy, Defense, and state security personnel to respond to the scene on Highway 307. After a brief dialogue with the demonstrators, authorities reopened the highway, though residents remained in the area.
No repression, injuries, or arrests were reported during the protest. Traffic in the zone was disrupted but expected to resume overnight.
The protest follows a February 2 armed confrontation in Limones that left one person dead and one detained, both alleged members of a criminal organization. That clash occurred weeks after the Coordination Group for Peace and Security Construction began surveillance and intelligence operations in the region to dismantle a violent criminal group vying for control of illicit activities.
