Cozumel Deer Hit by Car Sparks Outrage

COZUMEL, QRoo — The circulation of a video showing a deer that was hit by a car on the road to Playa Mezcalitos has generated outrage among residents of Cozumel, who are demanding greater sensitivity from drivers and sanctions for those responsible for such incidents.

According to biologist Rafael Chacón Díaz, three cases of wildlife roadkill have been attended to in the eastern part of the island so far this week, reflecting an increase in such incidents in the region.

Citizens urged the public to file formal complaints with the competent authorities, stating that social media posts have not yielded results in preventing these events.

Chacón Díaz noted that the white-tailed deer is a protected species considered sacred by Indigenous communities such as the Huichol, and he insisted on the necessity of driving with caution and respecting local wildlife.

The problem has reignited debate over the installation of signage, speed bumps, and educational road safety campaigns to protect the animals inhabiting the eastern zone of Cozumel.
