Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Journalist Hilario Alfonso Cruz Lara fled Puerto Aventuras, a town located in the tourist municipality of Playa del Carmen, after enduring a brutal beating that endangered his life. The attack occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, June 1, in the town governed by Gilberto Gómez Martínez, a union leader from the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (CROC) who has aligned himself with the PRI-PAN coalition and later with Morena to remain in power.
A Violent Assault
On the day of judicial elections, Cruz Lara was intercepted while heading to a polling station to vote. Several individuals driving pochitaxis—local mototaxis—forcibly removed him and took him to a secluded area.
“They pulled me out violently and dragged me into a green area. They beat me, kicked me. There were four men. Three of them threatened me from the back of the mototaxi… The driver took out a wooden board, forced me to kneel, and struck me ten times,” Cruz Lara told Proceso from an undisclosed location outside Quintana Roo, where he is now in hiding.
The assailants warned him, “This is for being a loudmouth, for criticizing Mayor Gilberto Gómez Martínez in your reporting. Consider this a first warning—next time, we’ll go after your family.”
Retaliation for Investigative Reporting
Cruz Lara attributed the attack to his coverage of alleged corruption in Puerto Aventuras, a town within Playa del Carmen near the Riviera Maya hotel corridor. He filed a criminal complaint with the local prosecutor’s office, recorded under case number 4597/2025, before fleeing the state.
For seven years, Cruz Lara had reported for Informativo Puerto Aventuras, a local news outlet. His departure adds him to the growing list of journalists displaced by violence in Mexico.
“If they do this to us as journalists, what could they do to an ordinary citizen?” he said.
Calls for Protection
The journalist has notified the federal Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, operated by the Interior Ministry. He is also preparing a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) for crimes against freedom of expression.
The incident underscores the dangers faced by reporters in Mexico, particularly those investigating corruption or local power structures.
