Rain Causes Flooding in Playa del Carmen (Video)

A flooded street in Playa del Carmen with water covering the road and sidewalks

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A brief downpour caused flooding in several neighborhoods of Playa del Carmen on Wednesday, creating serious problems for vehicle traffic and forcing pedestrians to wade through water.

The sudden rain led to water pooling in streets, particularly in areas where trash had blocked storm drains. Residents said garbage left on roadsides or at bus stops obstructed drainage systems, worsening the flooding.

“There’s no civic culture — everyone throws their trash in the street, and every time it rains it affects everyone. The municipal government should launch awareness programs to prevent greater risks,” said resident Marcelino García Luna.

Another resident noted that people often leave trash on the street when garbage trucks don’t come, and scavengers tear open bags, creating piles of litter that clog drains.
