Cancún, Mexico — The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Quintana Roo has carried out its third multi-organ donation of the year, marking a historic milestone for the region. The procedure, made possible by the altruistic decision of a grieving family, has provided life-saving transplants for four patients on the waiting list, according to Dr. Moisés Campos Navarro, Hospital Coordinator for Organ and Tissue Donation at General Regional Hospital (HGR) No. 17 in Cancún.

A Legacy of Generosity

The donation was made possible by the family of Andrés "N," remembered by loved ones as a noble, generous, and exceptional man. His organs were procured for transplantation, with two corneas sent to the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) in Veracruz and two kidneys transported to the UMAE in Mérida.

This latest donation brings Quintana Roo’s total to 15 organ and tissue donations in 2025, a testament to the collaborative efforts of medical personnel, hospital donation coordinators, and—most critically—families who, despite their grief, choose to give the gift of life.

A Family’s Painful Yet Meaningful Decision

Lilia "N," the donor’s wife, shared the emotional journey her family endured while honoring her late husband’s wishes. He had previously expressed his desire to donate his organs.

"For me, knowing that part of him lives on in others brings me comfort. My husband has become an angel for those who now have a new chance at life," Lilia said.

She recounted that the donation process began after a family acquaintance, a physician, facilitated the initial steps. IMSS specialists then conducted all necessary tests and procedures to ensure the viability of the organs.

Lilia urged the public to openly discuss organ donation with their families and to make their wishes clear.

"If you have the opportunity, give someone else the chance to live. It’s an act that transcends and keeps the essence of those who have passed alive. To those who receive, make the most of this second chance," she emphasized.

IMSS Reaffirms Commitment to Organ Donation

The IMSS in Quintana Roo expressed deep gratitude to Andrés "N’s" family for their generosity and reiterated its commitment to promoting organ and tissue donation, affirming that "to donate is to transcend and give life after life."

Those interested in becoming voluntary organ and tissue donors can register through the National Transplant Center (CENATRA) at www.gob.mx/cenatra or the IMSS at www.imss.gob.mx/salud-en-linea/donacion-organos.
