Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A bus driver attempted to evade a DUI checkpoint, sparking a tense confrontation with police and causing chaos on a major avenue in Playa del Carmen.
The incident occurred on Colosio Avenue, where municipal police officers were conducting a sobriety checkpoint as part of routine traffic safety operations. When officers signaled the bus driver to stop for a breathalyzer test, the driver refused to comply, raising alarms at the checkpoint.
Witnesses reported that at least three private vehicles following the bus had previously been involved in collisions with the bus near the intersection of Lilis and Chemuyil Avenues. The drivers of those vehicles followed the bus to the checkpoint to report the incidents.
As police attempted to intervene, the driver reacted erratically, allegedly accelerating the bus toward officers in an attempt to avoid inspection. Authorities suspect the driver may have been under the influence of substances, based on his irregular behavior during the operation.
During the confrontation, one police officer managed to board the bus to try to control the driver. The driver then abruptly closed the door, trapping the officer inside and escalating tensions. Other municipal officers quickly responded, helping the trapped officer exit the vehicle and preventing the situation from worsening.
Police eventually gained control of the situation and administered a breathalyzer test to the driver according to standard protocol. Authorities impounded the bus and transported it to a vehicle impound lot. The driver will face legal proceedings to determine his status with authorities.
