Quintana Roo, Mexico — Governor Mara Lezama has pledged support for marine wildlife conservation, with a focus on protecting sharks, as part of the New Agreement for Well-Being and Development of Quintana Roo. The initiative, developed in collaboration with marine ecosystem advocate Cecilia Gutiérrez Navarro, aims to raise awareness about the critical role sharks play in ocean health.

Sharks: The "Guardians of the Ocean"

In a social media post, Governor Lezama emphasized ongoing efforts to safeguard marine life, particularly sharks, and to educate the public about their vulnerability. "Quintana Roo is one of the most beautiful places in the world and the only destination in Mexico where you can dive with bull sharks in their natural habitat," she stated. "This regulated and responsible activity promotes ecotourism and fosters conservation. Protecting our marine wildlife is not an option—it is a shared responsibility."

Cecilia Gutiérrez Navarro, recipient of the "Ramón Bravo Prieto" Medal for Ecological Protection Merit from the State Congress, explained that sharks are umbrella species, meaning their protection benefits entire marine ecosystems. As apex predators, they maintain the balance of reefs, corals, and seagrass beds.

Threats to Shark Populations

Gutiérrez highlighted the severe threats sharks face, including industrial fishing and the fin trade. "Millions of sharks are killed every year," she said. "This not only destroys marine life but also jeopardizes ocean health and our future. Sharks regulate populations of other species, preserving biodiversity and preventing overpopulation."

Governor Lezama praised Gutiérrez’s dedication to ecological protection through initiatives like Baalche Proyecto Azul and La Escuelita del Tiburón, which use science, education, and community engagement to reshape perceptions of these species.

The campaign underscores Quintana Roo’s commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a leader in marine conservation.
